An honest reading of the events of Stonewall will show that there were multiple instigators, having multiple kinds of identities, at different points over the five days of the riots. Efforts to center one person or group are simply factually inaccurate.

But I think this is a good thing. It speaks to the widespread feeling that police harassment was just no longer tolerable. The larger climate of the 60s obviously had a lot to do with this feeling.
