Tenured prof with PhD in the Humanities here: anyone pursuing graduate study in the arts, humanities and (most) social sciences right now should not be expecting to work in academia after graduation. Jobs in those areas are rapidly being downsized or eliminated as the neo-liberal model of universities as businesses sweeps through academia. If you can't see how your graduate study prepares you for work and you don't have other skills, be prepared to work in low-paying service industries, like food service, retail and the gig economy. I hate saying that but it's important the facuty start being honest with our graduate students: jobs are scarce and they're going to get more scarce.
