The coercion goes away when the request for pronouns is not done in a context marked by unequal power relations. Allowing the response to remain private and/or voluntary would do that. I now say to students, "If there's something you need me to know about you to allow you to fully participate in the course feel free to email me, speak to me after class, or come to office hours."
