There are some that would make the argument that “neurotypical” can serve a similar function as words like “White,” “abled,” or “cisgender.” These words name those who masquerade as neutral, natural or normal; they decenter through naming that which derives power from remaining un-named. It marks that which passes as unmarked.

Whether it has same “status” as cisgender, I don’t know. How would we ever assess that? But the words can have similar functions in language. That function is not, as you say, to “pay proper respect to…minorities” and nowhere in my piece did I make any such claim.
