“Transgender” and “cisgender” are not opposites, as much as some wish it were so. The terms have actual definitions and those aren’t determined by the ancient roots of their prefixes. I provided a definition of the term “cisgender” and tested gay men against it. They aren’t cisgender. (There’s actually an argument for them to be considered gender variant, gender expansive, or gender transgressive, which some — like preeminent trans scholar Susan Stryker — would group under the umbrella definition of transgender.) Also, some gay men identify as transgender but they weren’t the focus of my piece (for obvious reasons).
