Well, I’m not sure how important the point is but, yes, there is a difference between an effeminate boy and a transgender person. Transgender people experience a profound conflict between their gender identity and the sex they were labelled at birth. Not all effeminate boys are transgender, a point I make very clear in my piece. (Gender non-conformity and transgender identity are not the same thing.) What they may have in common is expressing gender in ways that differ from what’s expected for someone of their biological sex. That commonality, I argue, offers a potential point of contact and source of solidarity in a gender justice political movement.
