What I want, which is pretty strongly implied in my piece, is to live in a society that places little-to-no emphasis on one’s gender in social interactions and does not use it as the basis for one’s social status. Yes, you’re right, the world doesn’t revolve around me. That’s why I wrote about a social practice — requests for gender pronouns in public group settings — that I’ve witnessed but which exists independent of me (i.e. I wrote about the universe, not my place in it). There was very little about my piece that was biographical. Finally, to be clear: I think everyone present when such requests are being made is being “victimized.” They’re participating in a regime of knowledge about gender that oppresses everyone under it.
